Tewodros Assefa

DRIVEN ENGINEER AND LIFELONG LEARNER

Since beginning my college journey, I've been driven to become the person my friends could call if they wanted to build some crazy contraption. An engineer worthy of the name and with the skills to back it up too. I am grateful for this journey taking me to exceptional people and projects that I became passionate about and I am proud to share some of my work with you. So take a moment to check out my portfolio and get in touch if you have any questions.

Illinois Tech: Metal Additive Manufacturing Researcher

Jan 2022 - May 2022

The research work on Binder Jet additive manufacturing has allowed me to gain a deep understanding of the intricacies involved in producing a functional component that can compete with traditional manufacturing processes.

  • Assessed stainless steel densification and turnover rate under varying print parameters and processes

  • Analyzed fracture surfaces to identify microstructure evolution

  • Investigated Metal Matrix composites for additive manufacturing and their applications in various industries

Kitty Hawk Aero: Mechanical Engineering Internship

June 2021 - August 2021

This summer internship has exposed me to new and challenging concepts under the Aerostructures division. My work during that time included:

  • Developing analysis tools for composite structures test data under real-world mechanical tests

  • Utilizing multiple programming languages and API's for data transfer and post-processing of test results

  • Producing carbon fiber parts for analysis and confirmation of functionality in components

Society of Automotive

Engineers: Mechanical Design Engineer

February 2020 - August 2021

The assemblage of people for this project in creating an electric Formula one car was an exciting environment to be a part of.

  • Developed aerodynamic surfaces to redirect airflow around the body of the car creating downforce and grip

  • Utilized FEA and CFD simulations to analyze airflow and static structural performance improving surface aerodynamics & stress distribution

  • Optimized design process through programming languages to adapt to design changes

Robotic Motion Planning

January 2021 - May 2021

This spring project pushed me to work on developing and applying path planning techniques and algorithms.

  • SLAM path planning simulations for vehicle path using the Victoria Park dataset

  • Working on integrating modern control scheme with path planning algorithms for vehicle test

NASA NPWEE Academy: Engineering Lead

May 2020 - August 2020

The summer academy provided the opportunity to research and conceptualize a solution for NASA's pain points on moon colonization.

  • Conducted research and design for autonomous underground lunar mining and resource-seeking machinery

  • Formulated professional proposal documentation depicting necessity of the technology for water collection on lunar sub-surface

Formula SAE Front Wing Design

The Aerodynamics team of IIT Motorsports designed and manufactured the aerodynamic surface parts for the Formula E race car. This was done in order to guide the incoming flow of air and use it for cooling. I was put responsible for the design of the front wing allowing greater downforce and grip to be generated.

CubeSat Design

Integrating design principles and research methodologies for achieving NASA CubeSat merit and feasibility requirements.

  • Evaluated propulsion systems that can be utilized for a 6U CubeSat altitude change, orbit maintenance, and orbit shaping maneuvers

  • Designed a lightweight casing structure to house various components and withstand disturbances

Subsonic and Supersonic Testing

This class course gave me the opportunity to experiment and test airfoil response in a sub and supersonic wind tunnel.

  • Utilized a NACA airfoil to record the pressure distribution over subsonic a wing profile

  • Adapted the Schlieren experiment to identify supersonic shockwave angles and Mach numbers at various locations

Aircraft Design final design.png

Aircraft Design

This class project introduced me to the nature of development for new aircraft and design procedures to fall within requirements.

  • Designed a short take-off and landing attack aircraft capable of sustaining long recon flights and good maneuverability

  • Worked on landing systems and avionics design for the aircraft
